Bishop Burns: A time to be grateful and give thanks

Thursday, November 26, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we prepare to observe the Thanksgiving holiday, some might feel it’s a bit more difficult to see and celebrate our blessings this year. 2020 has been and continues to be a challenging time. Many have lost loved ones, health, and livelihoods due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and for them we must offer constant prayers.

Certainly, the COVID crisis, the natural disasters around the world, and the turmoil in our country are all heartbreaking. But I encourage you to also see the blessings that are evident during this time. Let us be grateful for all first responders, the nurses, the doctors and all of those health and safety officials fighting every day to get us through this pandemic.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis continues to challenge us to find safe ways to reach out to those around us who continue to suffer because of illness and poverty. As we observe this holiday, I ask that we pray for those who are struggling to put food on the table and a roof over their heads and all those who are sick or lonely. I know so many of you are already doing this, and I am so thankful for all of the good people in the Diocese of Dallas who pray and contribute to help those in need and our Church.

Let us never forget to thank God for his everlasting love that offers hope, and for the freedom that we are privileged to enjoy in this country. Let us get past grievances, pray for healing, and work together for unity in our Country and our communities.

Thank you for being part of our faith family and for all that you do for our Church. Please know that I offer a special prayer every day asking God to abundantly bless the faithful who make up our wonderful Diocese.

Please be safe this holiday and know that I wish you and your loved ones a happy Thanksgiving and a fruitful Advent!

Faithfully yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Edward J. Burns
Bishop of Dallas
